10 Signs Your Furnace Needs Repair

There is an endless list of reasons why you should call for furnace repair. It’s important to understand the need for repair versus the need for replacement. If you’re interested in learning about when you should call for furnace replacement visit: Signs You Need a New Furnace. Read on to learn about the most common reasons for furnace repair.

Strange Noises

If your furnace starts making unusual sounds, it is a clear indication that something is amiss. Here are some common noises and their potential causes:
  • Banging or Popping: This could be due to expanding or contracting air ducts or even a dirty burner.
  • Rattling: Loose components or debris inside the furnace or ductwork may cause rattling noises.
  • Squeaking: If you hear high-pitched squeaks, it might indicate problems with the blower motor or belt.

Inconsistent Heating

Uneven heating throughout your home can be caused by several factors:
  • Clogged Air Filter: A dirty filter restricts airflow, leading to uneven heating.
  • Ductwork Issues: Leaks, blockages, or poorly insulated ducts can hinder heat distribution.
  • Thermostat Problems: An inaccurate thermostat may not properly regulate the temperature.

Increased Energy Bills

A sudden spike in your energy bills, without a corresponding change in usage, can point to an inefficient furnace. Possible reasons include:
  • Clogged Filter: A dirty filter can cause your furnace to work harder, consuming more energy.
  • Inefficient Furnace: As furnaces age, they become less efficient, leading to higher energy consumption.
  • Thermostat Issues: A malfunctioning thermostat can lead to your furnace running longer than necessary.

Frequent Cycling

If your furnace turns on and off frequently, it may be due to:
  • Thermostat Problems: An incorrectly calibrated thermostat can cause frequent cycling.
  • Clogged Air Filter: Reduced airflow can lead to overheating and quick cycling.
  • Undersized Furnace: An improperly sized furnace may struggle to heat your home efficiently.

Yellow or Flickering Flame

A healthy furnace flame should be blue. A yellow or flickering flame may indicate:
  • Incomplete Combustion: This could be due to dirty burners or a lack of oxygen supply.
  • Gas Supply Issues: A problem with the gas supply line or regulator can affect the flame’s color.

Cold Air Blowing

If cold air is coming from your vents when the heat is on, potential causes include:
  • Faulty Heat Exchanger: A cracked heat exchanger can mix cold air with warm air.
  • Fan Problems: Issues with the blower fan can lead to improper air circulation.

Poor Air Quality

Dust, allergens, and dry indoor air can result from various furnace-related issues:
  • Dirty Filter: An unchanged filter can allow dust and particles to circulate in your home.
  • Ductwork Leaks: Leaky ducts can draw in contaminants from unconditioned spaces.
  • Inefficient Combustion: Incomplete combustion can release pollutants into the air.

Age of the Furnace

Furnaces typically last 15-20 years, and as they age, various problems can arise:
  • Decreased Efficiency: Older furnaces are less efficient and may struggle to heat your home adequately.
  • Increased Repairs: Components wear out, leading to frequent breakdowns and repair costs.
  • Safety Concerns: Older furnaces may pose a higher risk of carbon monoxide leaks or other safety issues. It’s important to have a functioning carbon monoxide detector.
For more information on furnace age read more here: How Long Do Furnaces Last?

Unusual Odors

Strange odors coming from your furnace should never be ignored:
  • Burning Smell: This could indicate overheating components or a dirty furnace.
  • Gas Odor: The smell of gas is a serious concern and should prompt immediate action, as it may indicate a gas leak.

Frequent Repairs

If you find yourself frequently calling for furnace repairs, it might be more cost-effective to replace the unit. Frequent breakdowns often result from worn-out components or an aging furnace that is no longer reliable.

DIY vs. Professional Furnace Repair

Cornell Plumbing and Heating ANSWERED THE CALL! Our furnace crapped out in the winter, it was 20+ years old so we knew it was coming but put it off until … view more it died. We were freezing for less than a day before Cornell quickly responded to our request for an inspection to see if the furnace was fixable. The inspector was very thorough and helped us understand all of the issues with our dead furnace and quickly got us connected to Randy who came over in a matter of minutes to walk through the options. Randy was very very knowledgeable and so friendly. I never felt pressured when talking to him, he was very practical and honest about what would be the best bang for our buck, while ensuring we had a solid heater for decades to come. We were on the fence about installing central AC (our house was built in 1890) but the summers in Portland have gotten so tumultuous that every year for the past four years, we've shopped around for AC quotes but just couldn't afford to commit. Randy built a great package for us that added AC to our furnace for a price that was very reasonable, so, we did it! We have a two year old and a baby on the way and we are very very thankful to know we have cool summers ahead of us and warm winters to enjoy in the comfort of our home. It's been night and day with the new furnace compared to what we were working with before. I never knew how warm our home COULD have been, until we got our new furnace installed. Oddly enough, our neighbors furnace also died like a week later and he saw we had Cornell over and asked about our experience. We were very quick to highly recommend Cornell, and my neighbor also got a new furnace from them! Needless to say, it was a smooth, quick and satisfying experience, you know, as satisfying as it can be to have to suddenly invest in heating and cooling, which can be many tens of thousands of dollars... but with the right folks, and the right system, the experience can be a sort of blessing in disguise - which it was for us!

We will definitely keep using them for our heating and AC. Thanks Jake!
