10 Signs Your Furnace Needs Repair

There is an endless list of reasons why you should call for furnace repair. It’s important to understand the need for repair versus the need for replacement. If you’re interested in learning about when you should call for furnace replacement visit: Signs You Need a New Furnace. Read on to learn about the most common reasons for furnace repair.

Strange Noises

If your furnace starts making unusual sounds, it is a clear indication that something is amiss. Here are some common noises and their potential causes:
  • Banging or Popping: This could be due to expanding or contracting air ducts or even a dirty burner.
  • Rattling: Loose components or debris inside the furnace or ductwork may cause rattling noises.
  • Squeaking: If you hear high-pitched squeaks, it might indicate problems with the blower motor or belt.

Inconsistent Heating

Uneven heating throughout your home can be caused by several factors:
  • Clogged Air Filter: A dirty filter restricts airflow, leading to uneven heating.
  • Ductwork Issues: Leaks, blockages, or poorly insulated ducts can hinder heat distribution.
  • Thermostat Problems: An inaccurate thermostat may not properly regulate the temperature.

Increased Energy Bills

A sudden spike in your energy bills, without a corresponding change in usage, can point to an inefficient furnace. Possible reasons include:
  • Clogged Filter: A dirty filter can cause your furnace to work harder, consuming more energy.
  • Inefficient Furnace: As furnaces age, they become less efficient, leading to higher energy consumption.
  • Thermostat Issues: A malfunctioning thermostat can lead to your furnace running longer than necessary.

Frequent Cycling

If your furnace turns on and off frequently, it may be due to:
  • Thermostat Problems: An incorrectly calibrated thermostat can cause frequent cycling.
  • Clogged Air Filter: Reduced airflow can lead to overheating and quick cycling.
  • Undersized Furnace: An improperly sized furnace may struggle to heat your home efficiently.

Yellow or Flickering Flame

A healthy furnace flame should be blue. A yellow or flickering flame may indicate:
  • Incomplete Combustion: This could be due to dirty burners or a lack of oxygen supply.
  • Gas Supply Issues: A problem with the gas supply line or regulator can affect the flame’s color.

Cold Air Blowing

If cold air is coming from your vents when the heat is on, potential causes include:
  • Faulty Heat Exchanger: A cracked heat exchanger can mix cold air with warm air.
  • Fan Problems: Issues with the blower fan can lead to improper air circulation.
For more information on furnaces blowing cold air, read more here: Why Is Your Furnace Blowing Cold Air?

Poor Air Quality

Dust, allergens, and dry indoor air can result from various furnace-related issues:
  • Dirty Filter: An unchanged filter can allow dust and particles to circulate in your home.
  • Ductwork Leaks: Leaky ducts can draw in contaminants from unconditioned spaces.
  • Inefficient Combustion: Incomplete combustion can release pollutants into the air.

Age of the Furnace

Furnaces typically last 15-20 years, and as they age, various problems can arise:
  • Decreased Efficiency: Older furnaces are less efficient and may struggle to heat your home adequately.
  • Increased Repairs: Components wear out, leading to frequent breakdowns and repair costs.
  • Safety Concerns: Older furnaces may pose a higher risk of carbon monoxide leaks or other safety issues. It’s important to have a functioning carbon monoxide detector.
For more information on furnace age read more here: How Long Do Furnaces Last?

Unusual Odors

Strange odors coming from your furnace should never be ignored:
  • Burning Smell: This could indicate overheating components or a dirty furnace.
  • Gas Odor: The smell of gas is a serious concern and should prompt immediate action, as it may indicate a gas leak.

Frequent Repairs

If you find yourself frequently calling for furnace repairs, it might be more cost-effective to replace the unit. Frequent breakdowns often result from worn-out components or an aging furnace that is no longer reliable.

Overall great experience with Cornel's Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning. It first started with an inspection of my old units which were getting … view more close to 20 years old and I could tell they might be losing steam. Don came out to look over everything and pointed out that the AC unit was running colder than expected which meant the furnace was probably not in the best shape either. Sure enough he inspected the furnace and found more problems. Don was informative, kind, and very helpful. He pointed us towards David who help spec out what a new set of units would like and provided prompt estimates and answered any questions I had. Due to circumstances David was able to coordinate a next day install of the new units and maintained great response times and updates during the whole process. During the install I met Jace and Victor. Jace was the lead technician on the install but both he and Victor were meticulous in their work and got the job done with no issues. The next day and after some consideration I decided to replace my higher end filter system with a Media filter and David was helpful enough to coordinate Jace to come back out the following week and quickly switch out the filter system. I would recommend Cornel's to anyone looking for a team of high quality technicians who take pride in their work and deliver on their promises.

Cornel's did a nice job of replacing our old hot water heater. It had been part of a geothermal ground source heating system installed when we built … view more the house in 1997. The hot water function of the system had been isolated to run separately a number of years ago, but now the tank was giving out.
There were some details at first for the plumbers to understand what was involved in fully separating a new heater from the old system. We also wanted a heater that was a bit more than just a standard stock model. Once that was understood so they could write a quote, things got underway.
Brendan arrived the next day pretty much as scheduled. Very nice, caring for the situation, we had a review of the work while looking at the existing equipment. From that point, I left him to do his work. I believe it was about 3 hours later that he was done. It all looked so much better, and it's been running just fine.
After Brendan was done, we sat in the kitchen and discussed any minor details. He was very nice and reassuring about how everything seemed just fine, and to be sure and contact them if anything did come up. We paid the bill, and he was on his way.
