Discover the answer to: Why is my outside AC unit frozen? with Cornel's Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning in Portland, OR.
A frozen outside AC unit is a clear sign that something’s not right with your air conditioning system. This unexpected issue can lead to a significant decrease in your AC’s efficiency, potentially leaving you in discomfort during the hotter months. Understanding why your AC unit freezes and knowing the steps to safely thaw it is crucial to getting your system back up and running. In this blog, we’ll cover everything from answering “Why is my outside AC unit frozen?” to the benefits of calling Cornel’s Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning for professional air conditioning repair.

What It Means When Your AC Unit is Frozen

It’s not uncommon to find your AC frozen in the middle of the winter. Finding your outside AC unit encased in ice during a heatwave might seem ironic. However, this indicates a problem with the airflow, refrigerant levels, or mechanical failures within the system. An “AC line frozen” scenario can cause your unit to work harder than it needs to, increasing your energy bills and risking permanent damage to the system. We’ll give you expert tips on keeping your AC thawed throughout the entire year.

Outside AC Unit Frozen in the Winter

Taking care of your AC unit during the winter months is crucial, especially to prevent it from freezing and sustaining damage. During the colder season, it’s important to ensure that your AC system, particularly the outdoor components, is well-protected against harsh weather conditions. This involves:
  1. Clear any debris, leaves, or snow that may accumulate around the unit to prevent airflow restriction and freezing.
  2. Install a protective cover designed for your specific AC model to shield it from snow and ice, ensuring it allows for proper ventilation to avoid moisture buildup.
  3. Perform periodic checks during the winter to identify potential issues early, ensuring your AC unit remains in optimal condition for efficient performance when warmer temperatures return.

Outside AC Unit Frozen in the Summer

Several factors can lead to a frozen AC unit, even in the peak of summer. Low refrigerant levels, poor circulation, and faulty components can cause the temperature in the coils to drop below freezing, leading to ice formation. It’s a counterintuitive situation where, despite the heat, your AC “frozen coil” becomes a real issue. Thawing your AC unit is a delicate process that requires patience. To thaw your AC in the summer, follow these steps:
  1. Turn off your AC to prevent further damage and allow the ice to melt naturally.
  2. Avoid using any sharp or hot objects to speed up the thawing process, as this can damage the unit.
  3. Place a fan near the unit to help circulate warm air and gently expedite the thawing.
  4. Remember, safely thawing your AC unit is about giving it time to defrost without forcing it.

When to Call a Professional

If your AC unit frequently freezes or if thawing doesn’t solve the issue, it’s time to call in the experts. Persistent freezing can indicate a deeper problem that requires professional diagnosis and air conditioner repair. Professionals can check for refrigerant leaks, and electrical issues, and ensure your system is running efficiently. If thawing was not performed properly, Cornel’s Plumbing can also inspect your unit to ensure there was no damage caused. If damage was caused, don’t fret, we’ve got you covered with expert AC repair!

Both Hunter and Eric were great! We initially setup an HVAC tune-up, then decided to take care of some drain/plumbing issues as well. Both techs were helpful, … view more knowledgeable, and friendly.
Adding an update to say that Brenden was super helpful and informative as well. Between all of our various needs this whole team has been a well oiled machine.

Our hot water heater broke suddenly last night. Jake at Cornel came quickly, fixed the issue, showed us how to troubleshoot for next time, and helped us … view more figure out how to save money. He was very friendly and explained what he was doing in an easy to understand way. After running some quick numbers, we ended up getting the 1 year membership so it will be easier and more cost effective to schedule follow up maintenance for our HVAC as well, since that hasn't been looked at in almost 10 years & we've been meaning to do that anyways. We used Cornel a couple times before & had a good experience again today!

We had the unfortunate luck of having a plumbing issue and a furnace issue at the same time. Cornel dispatched techs for both the HVAC system and the drainage … view more issue. Hunter J was professional, efficient and pleasant when fixing the issue with our furnace. It was a minor issue, thankfully, and he noted the need for cleaning the blower wheel as well but didn’t pressure me at all when I declined. He gave me some helpful info to know about the furnace for future upkeep. Eric B was professional, knowledgeable, kind and honest when addressing the plumbing concern. He got in the crawl space to assess our drainage pipes before beginning his work which was reassuring to me. He tried a cheaper cable solution first and when that didn’t work he cleared the pipes with the pressure jet. He was attentive to safety and quality and upon completion he double checked to make sure things were operating as expected. He also provided me with helpful info about our drainage pipes and incoming water lines, things to watch out for, anticipated future needs, etc. He was personable, pleasant and respectful and answered all of my questions. He was attentive to make sure our cat didn’t get out when coming/going. When in and out of the house he took his shoes covers on and off repeatedly. He cleaned up any mess thoroughly. I was genuinely impressed with his skillful and thoughtful service. As a homeowner it can be hard to find quality, trustworthy service but I received just that today. It made me want to use Cornel again for future needs
