If you’re having hot water heater problems, don’t worry – you’re not alone. In fact, these are some of the most common issues that homeowners face. They are also one of the most frustrating problems because most of us use hot water every day for everything from bathing to doing laundry to washing our hands.
You’ll want to get your water heater issues fixed right away. Here are the top 5 hot water heater problems and how to fix them:
Problem #1: Not Enough Hot Water
If you’re running out of hot water quickly, it could be because your hot water heater isn’t big enough for your needs. This is a common problem in homes with large families or homes that use a lot of hot water. The fix is to install a larger water heater. Water heater tanks range in size from 20 to 80 gallons, so you should be able to find one that’s the right size for your home.
You may also want to consider installing a tankless hot water heater, which can provide an endless hot water supply. You will still need to consider how much hot water your house uses at one time; if you need hot water running in several places at once, you’ll need a bigger tankless water heater to handle the load.
Problem #2: Water is Too Hot or Not Hot Enough
If your water is too cold or too hot, it could be because the thermostat on your water heater is set to the wrong temperature. You can adjust the thermostat yourself, but keep the temperature in a safe range between 120°F and 140°F. If your water is too hot, it could scald you or your children. If it’s too cold, your water won’t be the optimal temperature for preventing bacteria from growing.
Another possibility is if the pilot light is out. You can relight the pilot light yourself by following your water heater’s manual.
Problem #3: Water is Leaking from the Hot Water Heater
If you see water around your hot water heater, shut off its power right away. Turn off the water supply to it as well.
Next, determine the source of the leak. Check all the valves and pipes to see if they are loose or damaged. Tighten or replace any parts that are loose or damaged. If the leak is coming from the tank itself, you most likely will need to install a new water heater.
Problem #4: Sediment in Water Heater
Sediment can build up in your water heater over time, especially if you have hard water. The sediment can cause your water heater to overheat and even break.
To prevent problems, you can flush the sediment out of your hot water heater. It is best to do this once a year to prolong the life of your system and avoid serious water heater problems. First, turn off the power to the hot water heater and turn off the water supply. Next, attach a hose to the drain valve at the bottom of the water heater and open the valve.
Let the water run until it’s clear, then close the valve and turn the power back on and the water supply back on. Make sure to check for leaks.
Problem #5: No Hot Water
If your hot water heater is not working at all, the first thing to do is check the power supply. Make sure the circuit breaker is turned on and that the fuse hasn’t blown. If the power is off, turn it back on and see if that fixes the problem.
If the water heater is still not working, the thermostat’s next thing to check. Make sure it’s turned on and set to the correct temperature. If it’s not, turn it on and adjust the temperature.
Your water system is an essential part of your home, and hot water heater problems can be a pain to deal with and disrupt your everyday routine. If you’re having problems with your water heater, check to see if any of these five common problems are the cause. And if you can’t fix the problem yourself, call a hot water heater repair technician.
